Hi tech team, welcome to our firewall training session. Let’s quickly cover the basics of how firewalls protect your network from cyber threats.
So what exactly is a firewall? Picture it like a bouncer at a club. It checks every request and decides who’s allowed in, and who needs to stay out, based on security rules.
When you start configuring a firewall, the first step is to define its role. Ask yourself: is it protecting the network perimeter, or is it being used to segment different areas within your internal network?
Next, organize your zones. Typically you’ll have trusted, untrusted, and DMZ zones, which help control how traffic moves, between internal systems and the outside world.
Then comes the most important part—your rules. Stick to the principle of least privilege. Only allow what is absolutely necessary, and be precise about sources, destinations, and services. It’s also good practice to place the most restrictive rules first for better control.
At the end of the day, firewall configuration isn’t a one-time setup—it’s ongoing maintenance and attention. Keep it tight, stay consistent, and you’ll stay ahead of potential threats.
