In an emergency, knowing what to do—and doing it quickly—can save a life. Let’s walk through how to safely use an epinephrine auto-injector.
First, recognize the signs of a severe allergic reaction. Watch for symptoms like difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or hives. If these symptoms appear after exposure to an allergen, it’s important to use the auto-injector right away.
Start by removing the safety cap. Pull it straight up, and be careful not to touch the orange tip. Next, place the orange tip against the middle of the outer thigh. Then swing and push down firmly until you hear a click. Once you hear the click, hold the injector in place for three full seconds while the medication is delivered. After that, remove the injector and gently massage the injection area for about ten seconds.
As soon as the injection is given, call 911 immediately—even if the symptoms seem to improve. The patient still needs emergency medical evaluation. Do not drive yourself, and stay with the patient until help arrives.
And remember, being prepared can make all the difference. Keep your auto-injector accessible, know the steps, and don’t hesitate in an emergency—your quick action could save a life.
