Good morning, class. Today we’re going to explore the true origins of Mother’s Day, its deep meaning, and how cultures around the world celebrate it.
It all began in 1908, when a woman named Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother, who had always dreamed of a day to honour mothers. Anna worked tirelessly to make that dream a national reality.
Her efforts paid off in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mother’s Day a national holiday in the United States.
But its real significance isn’t in gifts; it’s about taking time to thank the women who shape our lives with unconditional love and sacrifice.
And around the world, the celebration takes on beautiful, unique forms. In the UK, for instance, Mothering Sunday dates back to the 1500's, when families would reunite and bake a special simnel cake, a light fruitcake topped with eleven marzipan balls. In Mexico, Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 10 with joyful mariachi serenades and a focus on family togetherness. Over in France, children give a charming flower‑shaped cake and often present a medal to their mother, a tradition that started after World War I.
No matter the culture, the heart of the day is the same, honouring maternal love. So, as we learn this history, I want you to think of a heartfelt way to appreciate the mother or mother figure in your own life, thank you.
