When someone’s heart stops, every second counts. CPR — or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation — can double or even triple the chances of survival. Let’s walk through the key steps to perform it safely and effectively.

First, check for responsiveness — tap the person’s shoulder and ask loudly, “Are you okay?". If there’s no response, call emergency services immediately, or ask someone nearby to do it.

Next, check for breathing — if there’s none, begin chest compressions. Place the heel of your hand on the center of the chest, put your other hand on top, lock your elbows, and push hard and fast — about 2 inches deep at 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

If trained, give two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions: tilt the head back, lift the chin, seal your mouth over theirs, and blow until the chest rises.

Continue CPR until help arrives or an AED is available. Follow its prompts if you have one. Remember: stay calm, act quickly, and don’t be afraid — your hands could be the difference between life and death.
